What driving licences do we accept?
Goldcar Driving License Policy
The driving license requirements depend on the country where you pick up your vehicle.Please read carefully to ensure you have the correct documentation before your rental.
1. Domestic customers
If you are renting a car in your own country of residence, you only need to present a valid driving license issued in that country, provided it meets the requirements listed in section 5 below.
Examples:
- A Spanish customer picking up a car in Spain only needs a valid Spanish driving license.
- An Italian customer picking up a car in Italy only needs a valid Italian driving license.
2. EU customers
If you are from a country belonging to the European Union and you are collecting your vehicle in an EU country, you only need to present your national driving license, provided it is written in the Roman alphabet.
- If your national license is not in the Roman alphabet, you must also present a valid International Driving Permit (IDP), together with your national driving license.
3. Non-EU customers
If you are renting a car and your driving license was issued outside the European Union, please follow these rules:
A. Standard rule (all countries except Italy)
- If your country is listed in section 4 below, and your driving license is written in the Roman alphabet, you may use your national license on its own.
- If your driving license is not in the Roman alphabet, you must also present a valid International Driving Permit (IDP), together with your national license.
B. Special rule for rentals in Italy
If you are collecting your vehicle in Italy, the rules are stricter by law:
- Non-EU customers must always present:
- Their valid national driving license, and
- Either:
- A valid International Driving Permit (IDP),
- OR a sworn translation of the national driving license into Italian (accepted only in Italy as an alternative to the IDP).
This requirement applies even if your country appears in the list in section 4 and your license is written in the Roman alphabet.
It is the customer’s responsibility, before picking up the vehicle, to make sure they are in possession of the aforementioned documentation.
The listed documents must be produced at the counter in paper or laminated version, and that photographic reproductions or images on mobile phones are not accepted. International driving licenses issued by online sites (digital/PDF format) managed by private entities are not accepted.”
4. Countries whose national licenses are accepted without an IDP (if in Roman alphabet)
For the countries listed below, the national driving license is accepted on its own only if it is written in the Roman alphabet and contains all required information (see section 5).
Here is an example of a Driving Permit issued in both alphabets (Latin and local) that we can accept:
If the license is not in the Roman alphabet, you must also present a valid IDP, together with the national license.
- Europe: Albania, Armenia, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Vatican City.
- Americas: Argentina, Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela.
- Asia & Oceania: Australia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Fiji Islands, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Republic of Korea (South Korea), Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Vietnam.
- Middle East & Africa: Algeria, Bahrain, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Lebanon, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Republic of South Africa, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, State of Palestine, Tunisia, Uganda, Zimbabwe.
5. Mandatory requirements for all driving licenses
Every driving license presented must meet all the following requirements:
a) Written in the Roman alphabet, with or without an additional alphabet.b) The words “Driving License” (or equivalent) must appear on the document, in the issuing country’s language.c) It must clearly display:
- Full name of the driver
- Date and place of birth
- Date of issue and expiry
- Name or official seal of the issuing authority
- Driving license number
- Photo of the driver
- Signature of the driver
- Vehicle categories the driver is permitted to operate d) Vehicle categories must be indicated using a pictogram in line with international standards.
- Category B must be present, as it is required to drive Goldcar vehicles.
6. If the requirements are not met
If a customer does not meet the above requirements, they must present an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued in accordance with one of the following international agreements:
- Annex 10 of the International Convention of Geneva,
- Annex E of the International Convention of Paris (not valid for Italy),
- Annex 7 of the International Convention of Vienna.
The IDP must always be accompanied by the national driving license to be valid.
7. Responsibility of the customer
It is always the customer’s responsibility to ensure they carry the correct documentation when renting a vehicle.
- The driving license must be valid and unexpired.
- When applicable, both the national driving license and the IDP or sworn translation must be presented together.
- Goldcar reserves the right to refuse the rental if these requirements are not met.
